In June, 2017, 21 scientists from nine countries met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, to finalise their critical review and evaluation of the carcinogenicity of seven chemicals, including melamine. As a result, all seven chemicals were re-classified as Category 2B –
“possibly carcinogenic to humans”. For Melamine, the re-classification only relates to melamine powder
and has no effect on any other melamine downstream intermediate or final products.
Melamine powder is used in the production of flexible PU foam to make the foam fire retarded.
